The University is a model Nigerian university with developmental strategies employed to sustain quality teaching, learning, and research, it is well known for its conducive environment for teaching and learning.

UNIMAID is one of the second set of universities created in 1975 during the military government, at the beginning the university did not have its own physical and permanent campus, the university started its campus at the former North East College of Arts and Science (NECAS) which as its temporary site.

Some of the staff of the NECAS were employed as UMAID staff to commence academic programmes at the university. During its first academic year, the university can enrol just 743 students into the Faculty of Art and Education, Faculty of Science and Social Science, and Faculty of Law

UNIMAID has faculties that cater to the diverse educational needs of its students. These faculties include the Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Management Sciences, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, and the College of Medical Sciences.

In 1978 the number of faculties at the university increased to six, and this gave birth to the creation of three more faculties

Over the years the universities have enrolled students within and outside Nigeria, the universities has also employed both teaching and non-teaching staff from other African countries, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean Islands.

As of the time of writing this article the University of Maiduguri currently has more than 45, 0000 enrolled students, 12 faculties, 77 academic departments, one college of Medical science, and a school of Postgraduate studies.

The faculties include the Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Management Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

List Of Faculties/Colleges At UNIMAID

1. College of Medical Science: The college of Medical Science was duly established with the University Act 83 of 1979, the college has four faculties which are; the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, and Faculty Dentistry

2. Faculty of Agricultural Science: The faculty was created in1978, the main aim of this college is to serve and produce goods for the nayion. the faculty of Agriculture has the followos; Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension, Department of Agricultural Technology, Department of Animal and Food Science, Department of Crop Science and Department of Soil Science.

3. Faculty of Education: This faculty was created  in 1978/79, before then the faculty was under the Faculty of Arts and Education before it was separated, currently there are four departments under this faculty which are the Department of Education, Department of Library and Department Information Science and Department Physical and Health Education

4. Faculty of Engineering: The Faculty of Engineering was established on 1st October 1983 with the aim of training engineers who will develop the region and Nigeria at large, as at then the faculty only had the following three departments; Civil and Water Resources Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. But now the faculty has the following departments; Agricultural and Environmental Resources Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Water Resources Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Food Science and Technology, Mechanical Engineering

5. Faculty of Law: The faculty was under the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law as a department before it was separated to become a full faculty in 1980/1981, during the separation of this faculty the faculty only had a department of Common Law in 1980/1981 and department of Sharia was added in 1997/1998, but later the department of Common Lawwas splitted into Departments of Private and Public Law, currently the faculty has 3 departments which are Department of Private Law, DepartmentPublic Law and Department of Sharia
