Physical health education is an important part of the child’s growth and development. Therefore, the children must be provided with an organized scheme for them to acquire all the necessary knowledge and skills.
The Physical Health Education Scheme of Work for Primary 2 aims to equip 5-6-year-olds with the right knowledge and skills to help them adapt to a healthy lifestyle.
The scheme is divided into three terms, each designed with a specific set of objects and intended learning outcomes.
From the first term of the scheme of work, the objectives are to: teach pupils the correct movement patterns of shooting and heading, perform basic movements such as bending, stretching, jogging, etc., teach them to imitate certain ergots made by people, animals, and machines around them, identify rules when shooting, heading, bending, and stretching, show a 75-meter dash showing start, form, finish, perform basic long jump skills, and mention safety rules.
In the second term, pupils will be instructed to perform basic skills in basketball and mention safety rules in basketball.
Mention the basic skills in swimming and demonstrate an entry and coming out of the swimming pool and mention the safety rules in swimming.
In the third term, pupils will be instructed to enumerate some ways of purifying the water; describe some methods of purifying water and demonstrate the process of purifying the water.
Explain the meaning of air pollution; identify some proper ways of resting and explain the best condition of sleeping and the explanation of resting and state the meaning of first aid; state the conditions that require first aid and list five safety rules.
Designed learning outcomes of the Physical Health Education Scheme of Work for Primary 2 ensures that pupils have learned and understood the objectives during each term.
In the first term, pupils should have learned to; perform skills of shooting and heading, leaping, walking, stepping and hopping, creative rhythm and movements, and mention safety rules on the playground.
In the second term, pupils should have learned to perform basketball skills correctly, state safety rules in basketball, state basic skills in swimming, demonstrate correct entry and coming out in the swimming pool, and state safety rules in the swimming pool.
During the third term, the following will be learnt; how to: enumerate methods of purifying water, describe methods of purifying water, explain the meaning of pollution; identify ways to rest; explain the best condition for sleeping; what a ventilated room is; state the meaning of first aid and safety education and list safely rules.
For the objectives and learning outcomes to be realized, teachers and pupils will need to engage in several activities. During the first term, teachers will need to demonstrate the basic skills in shooting and heading, observe pupils and offer help, lead pupils to mention safety rule; demonstrate a 75-meter dash revealing the start, form and finish, and supervise pupils.
In the second term, teachers should introduce the basic basketball skills and observe their pupils while offering assistance, introduce safety rules and ask the pupils to mention them, introduce basic skills in swimming, demonstrate the entry and coming out of the swimming pool and introduce safety rules.
In the third term, the teacher should introduce their pupils to methods of purifying water, explain air pollution, what is the best condition for sleeping and the importance of resting the meaning of first aid and safety education, and safety rules.
