Cultural and Creative Arts Scheme of Work for JSS 3 introduces students to Nigerian traditional and contemporary arts, music, drama, dance and creative skills.
Through these activities students develop their creativity, cultural awareness and appreciation for the arts and prepares them for further studies and potential careers in the arts and creative industries.
It also develops their artistic skills and deepens their connection to their cultural heritage and the various art forms in Nigeria.
Term 1 of the scheme is on revision and Nigerian traditional arts, their origins, and functions. Students learn about contemporary Nigerian art and artists, Aina Onabolu, Akinola Lasekan and Ben Enwonwu.
They will also learn about the meaning and uses of motifs, types (plant, floral, traditional and geometrical) and how to use them to decorate borders, make greeting cards and design patterns.
The second term begins with a review of the previous term’s work, introducing students to Nigerian contemporary art and the works of Aina Onabolu, Akinola Lasekan and Ben Enwonwu. They also learn about famous artworks and their locations.
The term also covers the meaning and uses of motifs, types (plant, floral, traditional and geometrical) and uses in decorating borders, making greeting cards and designing patterns. Students learn how to prepare artwork for display using labeling, framing and different display techniques.
Week 5 is on lettering, constructed and handwritten and their uses, constructing letters A to Z in upper and lower cases. They also learn about the qualities of good lettering such as simplicity and legibility.
Week 6 is on construction and design, constructing and designing packages, methods of package design, captions for packages and functions of package design.
Students learn about outlets for marketing artworks, shops, hotels, festivals, fairs and galleries and sources of funding from relatives, individuals, corporate and government organizations.
Week 7 is on embroidery, knitting, crocheting and choreography. Week 8 is on the prospects of studying dance in Nigeria, income earner and cultural promoter.
Week 9 is on unity, art terminology, perspective, painting and Nigerian cultural festivals. Last week is on these topics.
The third term begins with a review of the previous term’s work, drama creation, drama personnel, fabric design and printing, lettering, construction and design, care of tools and equipment, card making and decoration and preparing and displaying artworks.
