The Bayero University Kano (BUK) initially originated from Ahmadu Bello College, which was established in 1960 by the then Northern Nigeria Ministry of Education to prepare senior secondary certificate holders for General Certificate of Education and A-level courses in Arabic, Hausa, Islamic History, Islamic studies, and English Literature.
The college became a university in 1975 and was renamed Bayero University College, in 1980, the university stopped functioning as a faculty of Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria. It became a full-fledged university
Bayero University consists of colleges, faculties, centres, institutes, and schools. The College of Health Science comprises the faculty of Allied Health Sciences, the faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, the faculty of Clinical Sciences, and the faculty of Dentistry.
The College of Natural and Pharmaceutical Sciences comprises of the faculty of Life Sciences, the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the faculty of Physical Sciences.
Other faculties include the Faculty of Arts and Islamic Studies, the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, the Faculty of Communication, the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences, the Faculty of Education, the faculty of Law, the faculty of Management Sciences, the faculty of Social Sciences, and the faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
The university also has research centres such as the Centre for Advanced Medical Research, Centre for Infectious Diseases, African Centre for Excellence in Population Health and Policy, Centre for Gender Studies, Islamic Civilisation and Inter-faith Dialogue, Dryland Agriculture, Biotechnology Research, Renewable Energy, and Research in Nigerian Languages.
Currently, the institution has enrolled 45,810 students, with 4,619 staff members, including 1,721 academic and 2,898 non-teaching staff, 321 full professors, 7 international staff, and 124 academic programs, with 10 new programmes awaiting accreditation.
Some of the alumni of the university include Salisu Usman Ogbo, a rector at Kogi State Polytechnic, Ahmed Adamu, a petroleum economist and lecturer, Mansur Dan Ali, a Minister of Defence, Mohammed Mabdul, a Nigerian diplomat, Zaynab Alkali, a commissioner of women affairs and poverty development, Abba Gumel, a professor of mathematics at Arizona State University, Mukhtar Shehu Idris, Farooq Kperogi, Farouk Lawan, a Nigerian minister of power, Moses Ochonu, a historian, and others. They include Muhammad Sheme, a novelist, journalist, and publisher, and Jumai Bello, managing director of Bauchi Radio Corporation.

BUK Academic Programmes
1. Bachelor’s Degree Programmes: This Programme requires four to five years of full-time study leading to specialized degrees. Examples include Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor of Pharmacy, Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Bachelor of Arts in English, Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering, Bachelor of Laws, and Bachelor of Education.
2. Master’s Degree Programmes: This Programme Provides advanced training and specialization beyond the undergraduate level. The Programme required one to two years of full-time study.
3. Doctoral (PhD) Programmes: The Programme is for advanced research and scholarship in chosen fields. It requires several years of full-time study and research. Examples of courses in this programme include; a PhD in Agricultural Economics, a PhD in Computer Science, a PhD in Education, a PhD in Pharmacy, and a PhD in Geology.
