English Language Scheme of Work for Primary 4 is designed to impart an inclusive understanding of the language to students aged 8-9 years. The scheme comprises three terms, each of which has 13 weeks. Some of the topics that this scheme focuses on include comprehension, grammar, and composition.
In the first term, the scheme revisits the earlier classes to enable the students to refresh their memory and prepare a stronger base for the new topics . This will be achieved through subjects such as comprehension, grammar and composition.
Moreover, the term will highlight various topics to be discussed in the classes. These are; nouns, pronouns, verbs, prepositions, adjectives, adverbs, and sentence formation. The students will be introduced to comprehension exercises to familiarize them with the skills of reading and understanding.
In the second term, the learners will be introduced to determiners, prepositions, and antonyms. They will also learn about good eating habits, kindness, and how man modifies his environment. Additionally, the students will be taught question tags and movable verbal phrases. The term will also have a learning break known as a mid-term.
The third term of the scheme involves the following; adjective clauses, active and passive voice, speech division, and punctuation. Writing will also involve teaching homonyms and homophones, prefixes and suffixes. Finally, the students will be introduced to comprehension work that ranges from making outlines to complete summaries in reading.
The above scheme is very interactive and engaging for the students. It requires the students to be present in class for the duration these are carried out. The scheme encourages group work, participation in class discussions, and question-asking. It includes practical activities such as letter writing, essay writing, and story writing.
