Home Economics is a subject that students are taught to have practical knowledge about the management of home, food, health and clothing. It is a compulsory subject in any primary school for the children at age 8-9 years. Home Economics Scheme of Work for Primary 4 is an outline of the comprehensive learning experiences that are provided by the teacher throughout the academic year. The scheme has three terms in which each term covers a specific area of Home economics.
The first term of the Home Economics Scheme of Work for Primary 4 starts with an introduction to the subject: meaning, scope, and importance are taught to the students. This includes an insight into the human body and its parts and their functions.
It also covers an introduction to nutrition, food classification, and sources. Another topic taught in Term one is an introduction to kitchen equipment and utensils. This subject serves as the foundation to help students develop basic cooking skills. Term one ends with a mid-term break to culminate with a session on needlecraft. Needlecraft helps pupils learn about simple sewing of tools, knitting, and crocheting.
In the second term of the Home Economics Scheme of Work for Primary 4, students are exposed to various cooking methods such as boiling and roasting and other aspects like personal grooming, basic cosmetics, and clothing care.
This term will enable students to identify various types and reasons for caring for personal clothing. In the second half of the term, they will be taught how to prepare liquid soap, the use of simple tools and materials, and various types of stitches. The term ends with a revision lesson followed by an examination.
The third term of Home Economics Scheme of Work for Primary 4 focuses on what is an adequate diet, what is a balanced diet and the effects of deficiency and malnutrition.
The term will have a session underbaking where students will use most of the skills learned to do bake work. This term is critical as few weeks may not add much value to the development of the students. Students will also be taught more about snacks and fruit drinks among other units. The term will end with two revision lessons and a final exam.
