The Federal University of Uyo (UNIUYO) is one the third generation of universities in Nigeria established in 1991, the university is located in Uyo the capital of Akwa-Ibom state, before the establishment of the University of Uyo in 1991, there was an existing university called the University of Cross River State which was founded in 1981 by the Cross River State Government.
Akwa Ibom whose capital was located in Uyo was created out of Cross River State in 1987, with this development, the university was jointly owned by Akwa Ibom and Cross River State Government which lasted till 1991 when the Federal Government took over the institution which led to the change of name from University of Cross River State to Federal University Of Uyo.
The initial proposal was to convert the university to the Federal University of Technology (FUT), after a series of meetings and implementation strategy, the then Federal Government finally decided to convert the University of Cross River State to a Conventional University.
After the conversion of the University of Cross River State to the University of Uyo, the institution started its academic activities in the 1991/1992 academic session.
Currently, the university has five campuses, they are; The Main Campus, the Town Campus and Annex Campus, the College of Health Sciences Campus and the Ime Umanah Campus.
The university is officially recognized by the National Universities Commission of Nigeria (NUC) which means the institution is fully accredited to run degree programmes. The university has a total of 15,000 – 249,999 students.
The goal and objective of UNIUYO are to provide higher educational opportunities for Nigeria citizens who are ready to attain self-fulfilment through higher education and learning, the university is also poised to equip its students with the knowledge and skills necessary for them to live a better life, the university is also known for its role in promoting the development of the nation, promoting research and embraced excellence in teaching, learning and public service.
Currently, UNIUYO has 12 faculties and 2 institutes dedicated to run undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses and programmes in various fields.

List Of Faculties/Colleges At UNIUYO
The university has 12 faculties and a College of Health Science. Here are the faculties and their brief descriptions:
1. Faculty of Agriculture: The Faculty of Agriculture of UNIUYO started as a Department of Agriculture under the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, now known as the Faculty of Science. The Faculty came into being in the 1988/1989 academic session with three departments; Agricultural Economics and Extension, Agronomy and Animal Science. As of the time of publishing this article, the university has eight departments including the Department of Agricultural Economics and Extension, the Department of Animal Science, the Department of Crop Science, the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, the Department of Food Science and Technology, the Department of Forestry and Wildlife, the Department of Home Economics and Soil Science.
2. Faculty of Arts: The Faculty of Art is one of the pioneer faculties from 1983 when the University of Cross River State was established. The faculty currently has the following departments; the Department of Communication Arts, the Department of English, the Department of History And International Studies, the Department of Linguistics & Nigerian Languages, the Department of Music, the Department of Philosophy, the Department of Religious & Cultural Studies, the Department of Theatre Arts, the Department of Foreign Languages – French
3. Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences: The Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences was created under the College of Health Sciences in 2002 with the following departments; the Department of Anatomy, the Department of Biochemistry; and the Department of Physiology. The faculty offers Bachelor of Science Degree (B.Sc) in Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology
4. Faculty of Business Administration: The Faculty of Business Administration has four departments aiming to provide effective teaching, learning and research that will provide students with the required skill and mental attitude to analyse and provide solutions to business problems that face society. The departments in this faculty include; the Department of Accounting, the Department of Banking and Finance, the Department of Insurance and Risk Management, the Department of Business Management and the Department of Marketing
5. Faculty of Clinical Sciences: The Faculty of Clinical Sciences was established in 2001/2002 academic session as one of the two initial faculties under the College of Health Sciences to award the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB, BS). Currently, the faculty comprises the Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology, the Department of Community Health, the Department of Orthopaedics/traumatology, the Department of Haematology, the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and the Department of Paediatrics
