The University of Ibadan (UI) was established in 1948 as University College Ibadan, the university operates as an independent college under the University of London, and the university academic programmes are supervised by the University of London until 1967.
The university became an independent/ indigenous university in 1962, two years after the first indigenous university (UNN) was established.
UI is known as the oldest awarding institution in Nigeria and it has contributed to the cultural development, political, industrial and economy of the Southwestern region of Nigeria and the country at large.
The university started operation in the Faculty of Art, Science and Medicine and has now spread into 17 faculties, namely; the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, the Faculty of Agriculture, the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the Faculty of Pharmacy, the Faculty of Technology, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Public Health, the Faculty of Dentistry, the Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences, the Faculty of Renewable Natural Resources, the Faculty of Environmental Design and Management, and the Faculty of Multidisciplinary Studies.
Apart from the faculties listed above the university also has some academic units which include; the Institute of Child Health, Institute of African Studies, Institute of Education, Centre for Child Adolescent and Mental Health, Institute for Advanced Medical Research and Training, Development & Production and Centre for Control & Prevention of Zoonosis, Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Centre for Drug Discovery, Infectious Diseases Institute, School of Business and National Institute for Maternal, Child & Neonatal Health.
The University of Ibadan has more than 15 Residential halls that accommodate about 30% of the school’s regular degree students. Some of the well-known Residence include; Obafemi Awolowo, Tafawa Balewa Hall, Kuti Hall, Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall, Independence Hall, Queen Idia Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Lord Tedder Hall, Kenneth Mellanby Hall, Sultan Bello Hall.

List Of UI Programmes
The University of Ibadan like other awarding institution in Niagara runs the different types of academic programmes such as; undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes.
1. There are more than 90 Undergraduate programmes available at the university as Bachelor’s degree programmes some include; Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Bachelor’s degree in Arts, Bachelor’s degree in Education, Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Bachelor’s degree in Law, Bachelor’s degree in Medicine, Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy, Bachelor’s degree in Science, Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine e.t.c.
2. The university also offers Postgraduate programmes in both Master’s degree and Doctoral programmes, some of the programmes runs in both programmes include; Agriculture, Arts, Education, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, Social Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine.
The University doesn’t limit itself to the listed above programmes, rather the university offers more academic programmes such as diploma and certificate courses in various fields, including Adult Education, Criminology, Peace and Conflict Studies, and Entrepreneurship Development.
