Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) formerly known as the University of Ife is among the three Federal Universities established between 1961 to 1962, the university is located in the ancient city of Ile-ife, Osun state
The university was established by the then-regional government of Western Nigeria, led by Samuel Ladoke Akintola. The university’s name was changed by Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida on May 12, 1987, in honour of the first premier of the Western Region Government of Nigeria (Obafemi Awolowo) who initiated the idea of creating the university.
The university started its academic activities on September 22, 1962, at a temporary site at the College of Arts and Sciences Ibadan with 244 students.
The first Vice Chancellor of the University (Oladele Ajose) started his tenure with the faculties of Arts, Agriculture, Social Studies, Law, Economics and Science. The university adopted the style of University College, Ibadan administration
In January 1967 the university moved to its permanent site at Ilé-ifẹ Òsùn state where the first faculty of Pharmacy was established in the whole of West Africa. The university also has a chemical engineering department and the first faculty of electronics components and electrical engineering.
The university currently has more than 60 departments, 13 faculties, 2 Colleges; College of Postgraduate and Health Science. The institution also offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
The university also has a residential hall for regular degree students, for the male students their halls of residence include; Awolowo Hall, Angola Hall, ETF Hall and Fajuyi Hall. The female residential halls include; Alumni Hall, Ladoke Akintola Hall, Moremi Hall, and Mozambique Hall. The postgraduate hall Murtala Muhammed Hall is a mixture of both male and female postgraduate students
