The Federal University Lafia (FULAFIA), along with eight other Nigerian federal universities, was established in 2011 to promote socio-economic transformation and address access and equity issues.
The university began academic activities at the former State Secretariat Complex in Lafia, the complex was donated by the Nasarawa State Government. After the donation the existing structures were renovated and more buildings were added before the start of academic activities.
The University moved to its permanent site in 2015, located on 206 hectares along Lafia Markurdi Road in Lafia, Nigeria. By 2018, the central administration and faculties, except two, had moved to the permanent site
The University’s name was changed to Federal University of Lafia on June 20, 2019.
The Federal University Lafia aims to be a top-tier institution in Nigeria by attracting and preparing talented young people from diverse backgrounds to become critical thinkers and well-rounded individuals.
The university also aims to promote scholarship and research in limited fields of learning and human endeavour. The motto of the university is Integrity, Innovation, and Excellence, guiding graduates to excel in their chosen fields.
