Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) is a federal university of technology in Bauchi, the university was established in 1980 and named after the only Prime Minister of Nigeria, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.
ATBU first students were admitted in 1981 for pre-degree and remedial programs, and the School of Science and Science Education began in 1982. In 1984, it was merged with Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria, and regained its autonomous status in 1988.
The curriculum in the institution is suited for a technologically based institution. The university offers degrees through seven schools; the School of Engineering, the School of Science, the School of Environmental Technology, the School of Agriculture, the School of Management Technology, the School of Technology Education, and College of Medical Sciences.
The schools are headed by Dean/Provost who reports directly to the Vice Chancellor, the Vice Chancellor is appointed by the Federal Ministry of Education.
Several chief executives has managed the institution right from its establishment till date, the past chief executives of the University include; Professor Adewale Oke Adekola (1980-1984), Professor Buba Garegy Bajoga (1984-1988), Professor Abubakar Sani Sambo (1995-2004), Professor Garba Aliyu Babaji (1904-2009), Professor Muhammad Hamisu Muhammad (2009-2014), Professor Abdulrahman Saminu Ibrahim (2014-2019), and Professor Muhammad A. AbdulAzeez (2019-present).
ATBU has 6 faculties, 30 academic departments, 8 directorates, and 7 centers and has recently established a college of Medical Science. The institution has over 10,000 undergraduate students.
Some of the notable alumni of this institution include Isa Ali Pantami, Nigerian Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, and Inuwa Kashifu Abdullahi, Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).
