Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), was established in 1962, it is the largest university in Nigeria and is approaching its 50th anniversary. The university covers 7,000 hectares with 18 academic faculties, a postgraduate school, and 111 departments. It has five institutes, six specialized centres, a Division of Agricultural Colleges, secondary and primary schools, extension and consultancy services and 500,000 alumni.
The university is known for its first-class architecture school and innovative agricultural research. The university offers Sciences, Social sciences, Arts, Environmental Design, and Engineering courses.
The university is ranked as the best for its expertise in architecture and research in agriculture.
This institution has nurtured two University Colleges; Abdullahi Bayero College and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa College. This institution also has a large medical programme with its own Teaching Hospital, the teaching hospital is one of the largest training hospitals in Nigeria and Africa.
The university has three main campuses in Zaria: Samaru, Kongo, and Funtua. Samaru houses administrative offices, sciences, arts, languages, education, and research facilities. Kongo hosts the Faculties of Law and Administration, with the Faculty of Administration consisting of Accounting, Business Administration, Local Government and Development Studies, and Public Administration Departments and Funtua has the School of Basic Studies.
The university is named after the Sardauna of Sokoto, Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello, the first premier of Northern Nigeria. The institution runs undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, associate degrees, vocational and remedial programmes, and a large medical programme with its own A.B.U. Teaching Hospital.
The university has 35,000 students enrollment, ABU has nurtured two new institutions: Bayero University Kano and the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University of Technology, Bauchi. It also has 27 tertiary institutions, including colleges of education, polytechnics, and schools of basic or preliminary studies.
The University’s notable alumni include the Emir of Kano, the Pro-Chancellor of Plateau University, the former President of Nigeria, and the former World Bank Executive Director.
