Federal University Gashua (FUGashua) is a learning and research institution in Yobe State, the university was established in 2013 by President Goodluck Jonathan to provide equal access to higher education for all states.
Yobe State is one of the educationally disadvantaged states, with low enrollment and high illiteracy rates. In 2010, the Federal Government of Nigeria approved the establishment of twelve universities in six geopolitical zones to expand access to tertiary education.
An Implementation Committee, including the National Universities Commission and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, was constituted to implement the universities.
The first phase began with nine universities in 2011, followed by three universities, including FUGashua, in 2013. In 2013, Professor Shehu Abdul Rahaman was appointed Vice-Chancellor and Sulu Dauda as Registrar.
In June 2015, FUGashua matriculated its 240 pioneer students, and three years later, the student population grew significantly, with 990 students matriculated in February 2018.
