The University of Benin (UNIBEN) was established by the then Colonel Samuel OsaigbovoOgbemudia-led military administration of Midwest State on the 23rd of November, 1970 as Midwest Institute of Technology.
The name was changed to UNIBEN on the 1st of July, 1971 after it was approved by the National Universities Commission(NUC) and became a federal university on the 1st of April, 1975.
The university started its academic activities with 109 students at Old Teachers’ Training College on Ekehuan Road (which is now one of the campuses of the University – Ekehuan Campus), currently, the institution has more than 60,000 students.
The university has two campuses, 15 Faculties, 1 College and 3 institutes of learning.
Over the years UNIBEN has gained National and international recognition from other universities in Nigeria, Lancaster University, England and more through collaborative research.
The University of Benin became the first university in Nigeria to build an indigenous computer Based Test (CBT) Software, the first to award industries chemistry and the first indigenous university in Nigeria to award a Ph.D. in Optometry. The university is also the first in the South-South region to establish a Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

1. Faculty of Arts: The Faculty of Art formerly started as the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in 1975 before it was split in 1978 by Professor RN Egudu. The faculty comprises eight departments, which are;

2. Faculty of Agriculture Science: The Faculty of Agriculture Science was approved to operate as a faculty in 182 but started its operation in 1983 the students under this faculty are trained in both Agriculture and Agriculture related courses, the faculty currently has seven departments namely;

- Department of Crop Science
- Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries Management
- Department of Forest Resources and Wildlife Management

3. School of Basic Medical Sciences: The School of Basic Medical Sciences was established in 2003 but started full operation in 2004, the school has seven departments, which are;

- Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics

4. School of Dentistry: The School of Dentistry is aimed at carrying out research programmes in fields like clinical sciences, social and behavioural science, and public health. The school has five departments s including;
