The University of Calabar started as the Campus of the University of Nigeria Nsuka in 1973 with a total of 154 student enrolments. UNICAL became a full-fledged university in 1975 after the then Federal Military Government of Nigeria announced the establishment of 7 new universities in the country including the University of Calabar was also among them.
The university is one of the second generation of federal universities in Nigeria, the university is located in Calabar an ancient city with a long tradition of culture. The university is known for its patriotic interaction with students from different parts of the world who came to study at the university of Calabar
UNICAL became one of the first universities in Nigeria to automate student enrollment through the school portal and start the school transcript request processed online without visiting the institution.

List Of Faculties/Colleges At UNICAL
The University of Calabar has 20 faculties, 1 Postgraduate school, 1 college, 3 Academic centres, 3 institutes of learning and 116 Departments.
1. Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Wildlife Resource Management: The Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Wildlife Resource Management is referred to as the Pride of University Of Calabar for producing two Vice Chancellors, the Faculculty has 8 departments including the Department of Agric Economic, the Department of Agric Extension and Rural Sociology, the Department of Animal Science, the Department of Crop Science, the Department of Fishes and Aquaculture, the Department of Food Science and Technology, the Department of Forestry & Wildlife Resource Management and the Department of Soil Science
2. Faculty of Allied Medical Sciences: The Faculty is known for its deep commitment to quality teaching and training of nurses, physiotherapists, public health workers, and radiographers. The faculty y comprises the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, the Department of Nursing, the Department of Physiotherapy, the Department of Public Health Technology, and the Department of Radiography and Radiological Science.
3. Faculty of Arts: This faculty has ten departments, the Departments are; the Departments of English and Literary Studies, the Departments of Fine and Applied Arts, the Departments of Fine art, the Departments of History and International Studies, the Departments of Linguistics and Nigerian Languages, the Departments of Mass communication, the Departments of Modern Languages and Translation Studies, the Departments of Music, the Departments of Philosophy, the Departments of Religious and Cultural Studies and the Departments of Theatre and Media Studies.
4. Faculty of Arts and Social Science Education: This faculty was approved in 2021 and has five departments consisting of the Department of Arts Education, the Department of Social Science Education, the Department of Library and Information Science, and the Department of Guidance and Counseling.
5. Faculty of Basic Medical Science: This faculty is one of the highly ranked faculty in the university with five departments consisting of the Department of Biochemistry, the Department of Anatomy, the Department of Physiology, the Department of Pharmacology, and the Department of Medical Laboratory Science.
6. Faculty of Basic Clinical Science: This faculty has five departments consisting of the Department of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, the Department of Chemical Pathology, the Department of Immunology, the Department of Medical Microbiology and the Department of Parasitology, and Medical Biochemistry.
7. Faculty of Biological Sciences: This faculty comprises five departments, including the Department of Genetics and Biotechnology, the Department of Microbiology, the Department of Plant and Ecological Studies, the Department of Science Laboratory Technology, and the Department of Zoology and Environmental Biology.
