Nigeria Maritime University (NMU), Okerenkoko, Warri Southwestern local government area, Delta was proposed by The Federal Ministry of Transport acting through the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) due to the chronic shortage of competitive technical personnel and professional human capital in maritime industry and economy in Nigeria.
On February 2018 Nigeria, Maritime University was approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to start degree programmes, to meet the 2017/2018 academic session the university developed a temporary site located at Kurutie town. The university started operation with 3 faculties, 13 programmes and a school of Basic studies.
The NMU became the first paramilitary university and maritime university in Nigeria and West Africa. It was established in 2018 and is located in Okerenkoko, Delta State
The main vision of this university is to produce professionals and experts who will contribute to employment and wealth creation in the global maritime economy.
The university aims to produce world-class mariners and professionals who are patriotic, courageous, and disciplined to manage Nigeria’s maritime industry, expand their knowledge and provide opportunities for Nigerians to be among the leading experts in the maritime industry and economy.
The university is poised to build a community of professionals who will be there to encourage each other to grow and serve the community with integrity, respect and sensitivity.
