The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) is one of the seven institutions established by the then Federal Military Government in 1975 as a University College. The university is located in Ilorin the capital of Kwara State.
The University of Ilorin was formerly known as University College of Ilorin, it was affiliated to the University of Ibadan the same year it was established.
The academic activities fully started on Monday, October 25th, 1976 with 200 enrolled students from three Faculties; the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Education
The institution became a full-fledged university In October 1977, since then the number of students has dramatically increased to more than 50, 000 students, and 3,500 staff as at the time this article was published.
The University of Ilorin moved to its main campus with about 1,000 students on January 2 1982. Faculties of Science, Engineering & Technology, Agriculture, Education, Law, Arts, Business and Social Sciences, the new seven-storey Senate Complex, the Unilorin Sugar Research Institute, multipurpose Auditorium and the Alumni office occupy the main campus.
On the other hand, the Mini campus is occupied by Unilorin Computer Centre, the Printing Press, the College of Health Sciences, the mini Library, Canteens, the Shopping Complex, the Institute of Education etc
The institution has grown from three Faculties established in 1976 to 16 Faculties and more than 60 departments. The faculties include; the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Agriculture, the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences, the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Life Sciences, the Faculty of Management Sciences, the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
As of the time of this publication, the university is ranked 3rd in Nigeria and 2879 in the world.
