Joseph Sarwuan Tarkaa University (JOSTUM), formerly referred to as the Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi (FUAM), was established in 1998. The institution was located in Markudi, Benue State.

The university evolved from the Federal University of Technology established in 1980 and became the Makurdi campus of the University of Jos in the same year.

The main reason behind the establishment of this university is to enlighten and provide scientific and modern Agricultural practices to students who are ready to become a useful and effective agent of agriculture by exposing themselves to the discipline of practical farm planning, production and marketing.

The University has 10 colleges with over 30 departments, the university also has a co-operative Extension Centre (CEC) and a Centre for Food and Agricultural Strategy (CEFAS).

List Of FUAM/JOSTUM Programmes

The University offers a variety of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral degree programmes across different faculties and departments.

1. The university runs an undergraduate programme which is known as a Bachelor’s degree, some of the courses offered under this programmes include; Agriculture, Arts, Education, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Law, Management Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. These programmes generally take four to five years to complete.

2. The institution also runs a Postgraduate degree Programme, which is divided into a Master’s degree and a Doctor of Philosophy, the master’s degree programme runs within 1 to two years, while the Doctor Philosophy runs for at least four years and above.

Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University Makurdi also offers other professional programmes such as certificate courses, diplomas, and postgraduate diplomas in various fields.
