Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) is the Oldest University of Technology in Nigeria, it was established in 1980 by the then Federal Government of Nigeria. The institution was the first of the three universities of Technology established in each geo-political region, particularly in states without a conventional university.
The university started its academic activities in November 1980 in the Old Government Technical College. The then Imo State government approved a permanent site for the University in 1982 and was designed by Concarplan – Enplan Group. The site is 25 kilometres south of Owerri and was chosen based on the National Universities Commission’s recommendations.
The university started with 225 students and 60 staff as at the time of publishing this article the institution now has over 25,000 students and over 50 professors.
The Futo Vision aims to transform the Federal University of Technology into a world-class institution by nurturing and developing promising students and staff in Science, Technology, and enterprise. The mission is to transform the nation’s economy from consumer-oriented to production-oriented, with a sound technology base.
