New Revised NERDC Primary 4 Mathematics Scheme of Work

Week 1: Addition and Subtraction (Extra)

1. Content: Advanced word problems with decimals; multi-step operations.

2. Performance Objectives: Pupils should be able to handle complex addition and subtraction scenarios.

3. Learning Activities:

i. Teacher Activities: The teacher facilitates group discussions on problem-solving approaches, the teacher presents challenging scenarios requiring multiple operations, the teacher guides students in breaking complex problems into steps.

ii. Learning Activities: The learners tackle challenging problems collaboratively in groups, the learners explain their solution process step by step, the learners verify answers using estimation and checking methods.

4. Teaching and Learning Resources: Advanced worksheets with multi-step problems and real-world contexts, real-life scenario cards depicting situations like budgeting or planning events.

Week 2: Multiplication (1)

1. Content: Multiplying numbers up to 3-digits; basic multiplication techniques.

2. Performance Objectives: Pupils should be able to multiply 2-3 digit numbers.

3. Learning Activities:

i. Teacher Activities: The teacher demonstrates the lattice method and traditional algorithm for multiplication, the teacher reviews multiplication tables and their importance, the teacher provides practice problems with increasing digits.

ii. Learning Activities: The learners practice multiplication tables through oral drills and written exercises, the learners solve 2-digit by 1-digit multiplication problems, the learners progress to 3-digit by 2-digit calculations.

4. Teaching and Learning Resources: Multiplication charts displayed prominently for reference, beads or counters for demonstrating repeated addition, textbooks with structured multiplication exercises and practice problems.

Week 3: Multiplication (2)

1. Content: Multiplication with decimals; applying multiplication in practical contexts.

2. Performance Objectives: Pupils should be able to multiply decimals; solve related problems.

3. Learning Activities:

i. Teacher Activities: The teacher uses shopping examples to show decimal multiplication in action, the teacher explains placing decimal points in products correctly, the teacher demonstrates real-life applications like calculating costs.

ii. Learning Activities: The learners calculate the total cost of multiple items with decimal prices in groups, the learners practice multiplying decimals with varying decimal places, the learners relate calculations to money and measurements.

4. Teaching and Learning Resources: Play money representing naira and kobo for practical calculations, decimal grids showing tenths and hundredths for visual understanding.

Week 4: Multiplication (Extra)

1. Content: Word problems and review of multiplication; error detection in multiplication.

2. Performance Objectives: Pupils should be able to solve multi-step multiplication problems.

3. Learning Activities:

i. Teacher Activities: The teacher reviews multiplication concepts with quick quizzes and games, the teacher teaches students to identify errors in calculations, the teacher presents word problems requiring multiplication and other operations.

Week 5: Division

1. Content: Dividing numbers and decimals; long division techniques.

2. Performance Objectives: Pupils should be able to perform division of multi-digit numbers.

3. Learning Activities:

i. Teacher Activities: The teacher steps through long division process on the board carefully, the teacher explains division as the inverse of multiplication, the teacher demonstrates dividing with and without remainders.

ii. Learning Activities: The learners practice division steps with guidance and support, the learners divide objects equally into groups in pairs, the learners solve division problems with checking by multiplication.

4. Teaching and Learning Resources: Division boards or charts showing the long division algorithm, counters or beads for demonstrating sharing equally, worksheets with graded division problems from simple to complex.

Week 6: Division (Extra)

1. Content: Division word problems; remainder interpretation.

2. Performance Objectives: Pupils should be able to solve division problems with remainders.

3. Learning Activities:

i. Teacher Activities: The teacher discusses sharing scenarios where remainders occur naturally, the teacher explains how to interpret remainders in different contexts, the teacher presents problems requiring thoughtful remainder handling.

ii. Learning Activities: The learners apply division to group sharing activities with real objects, the learners decide what to do with remainders based on problem context, the learners create and solve division word problems.

4. Teaching and Learning Resources: Real objects like pencils or books for division activities, problem cards with various division scenarios requiring different remainder interpretations.

Week 7: Mid-Term Break

Mid-term test should be conducted covering all topics from Week 1 to Week 6. Students take a break after the assessment.

Week 8: Estimation

1. Content: Approximating numbers; estimating measurements including lengths, heights, and widths.

2. Performance Objectives: Pupils should be able to approximate and estimate lengths, heights, and widths.

3. Learning Activities:

i. Teacher Activities: The teacher demonstrates rounding rules for different place values, the teacher shows how to estimate sums, differences, products, and quotients, the teacher models estimating measurements of classroom objects.

ii. Learning Activities: The learners round numbers to nearest ten, hundred, or thousand, the learners estimate answers before calculating exactly, the learners estimate lengths and heights of classroom objects then measure to verify.

4. Teaching and Learning Resources: Rulers and tape measures for measuring and checking estimates, estimation charts with rounding rules and examples, everyday items in the classroom for estimation practice.

Week 9: Open Sentence

1. Content: Number systems in expressions; finding missing values in equations.

2. Performance Objectives: Pupils should be able to detect missing numbers in open sentences.

3. Learning Activities:

i. Teacher Activities: The teacher explains open sentences using examples with boxes or blanks, the teacher demonstrates finding missing numbers using inverse operations, the teacher presents equations with missing addends, subtrahends, factors, or divisors.

ii. Learning Activities: The learners fill in blanks in equations to make them true, the learners solve for unknown values in various operations, the learners create their own open sentences for peers to solve.

4. Teaching and Learning Resources: Equation cards with missing numbers for practice, puzzles involving open sentences that make learning engaging.

Week 10: Money 1

1. Content: Money problems involving addition and subtraction; basic financial calculations.

2. Performance Objectives: Pupils should be able to solve logical money problems.

3. Learning Activities:

i. Teacher Activities: The teacher uses market examples to show money calculations, the teacher demonstrates making change and calculating totals, the teacher presents problems involving buying and selling.

ii. Learning Activities: The learners simulate buying and selling activities using play money, the learners calculate costs, totals, and change in various scenarios, the learners solve word problems involving spending and saving.

4. Teaching and Learning Resources: Play money in various denominations of naira and kobo, price lists showing costs of common items for realistic problems.

Week 11: Revision

Teachers should revise all lessons from Week 1 to Week 10 and prepare pupils for the examination. Review key concepts and practice sample questions.

Week 12: Examination

The examination for the second term should start. Students demonstrate mastery of all topics covered during the term.

Week 13: Examination, Marking & Vacation

Examination should be concluded together with marking and recording, then vacation follows. Teachers complete assessments and reports before students proceed to the third term.
