New Revised NERDC JSS 1 Physical and Health Education Scheme of Work

Week 1: Health promotion

1. Content: Knowledge: Meaning of health; Importance of health care (prevent illness and disease, manage chronic disease, extend life span); Way of maintaining good health (good feeding, recreation, sufficient sleep). Skill: Maintaining good health.

2. Performance Objectives: Students should be able to: 1. explain the meaning of health; 2. discuss the importance of health care; 3. describe ways of maintaining good health care.

3. Learning Activities:

i. Teacher Activities: The teacher guides group brainstorming on health promotion, The teacher facilitates internet searches and discussions.

ii. Learning Activities: The learners participate in groups to brainstorm on the meaning of health promotion, The learners use the internet to search, retrieve information and discuss importance of health care, The learners participate in group discussion on methods of maintaining good health.

4. Teaching and Learning Resources: Internet for online research; Video clips to illustrate health concepts; Other relevant materials like posters on health practices.

Week 2: Personal Health

1. Content: Knowledge: Determinants of health (Heredity, behaviour, Environment, and Life style); Characteristics of a healthy person (good physique, buoyancy, mental alertness, self confidence, agility, flexibility, balance strength, coordination); Personal hygiene (care of body, oral health, menstrual hygiene). Skills: Applying personal health.

2. Performance Objectives: Students should be able to: 1. explain the determinants of health; 2. discuss the characteristics of a healthy person; 3. describe how to maintain body, oral and menstrual hygiene; 4. maintain personal hygiene practices.

3. Learning Activities:

i. Teacher Activities: The teacher guides group brainstorming and debates, The teacher facilitates internet searches and project work.

ii. Learning Activities: The learners participate in groups and brainstorm on the determinate of health, The learners use the internet in groups to search, retrieve information and discuss characteristics of a healthy person, The learners participate in groups debate on various ways of cleaning the body,

The learners participate in group project on how to maintain personal hygiene e.g. care for the body, oral hygiene and menstruation.

4. Teaching and Learning Resources: Internet for research; Chewing sticks for oral care demo; Tooth brush and paste for hygiene practice; Water, soap, bowl for washing; Nail cutters, combs, hair cream for grooming; Sponge, towel, body cream for body care; Sanitary towel (pads, sterile materials) for menstrual hygiene.

Week 3: School and Community Health

1. Content: Knowledge: Meaning of Sewage and refuse; Methods of Sewage and refuse disposal in school and community (landfill, incineration, burning, composting). Skills: Demonstrating the methods of sewage and refuse disposal.

2. Performance Objectives: Students should be able to: 1. explain the meaning of sewage and refuse; 2. discuss the methods of sewage and refuse disposal in school and community.

3. Learning Activities:

i. Teacher Activities: The teacher facilitates whole class discussions and group brainstorming.

ii. Learning Activities: The learners participate in whole class discussion on the meaning of sewage and refuse, The learners brainstorm and discuss in groups methods of waste disposal in school and community.

4. Teaching and Learning Resources: Posters/charts showing disposal methods; Waste baskets/dustbins for practical demo; Brooms, moping sticks for cleaning; Water for sanitation illustration.

Week 4: Pathogens, diseases and prevention

1. Content: Knowledge: Diseases caused by pathogens; Disease preventive measures (adequate nutrition and exercises, clean environment, use of safe water, proper disposal of refuel and sewage, seeking and getting treatment on time, good hygiene, immunization, good ventilation, health education, vaccination).

2. Performance Objectives: Students should be able to: 1. identify diseases caused by pathogens; 2. explain disease preventive measures.

3. Learning Activities:

i. Teacher Activities: The teacher shows video clips and facilitates discussions and brainstorming.

ii. Learning Activities: The learners watch and participate in whole class discussion of video clips on diseases caused by pathogens, The learners brainstorm in groups on disease preventive measures based on assumed situations.

4. Teaching and Learning Resources: Video clips on diseases; Charts/posters illustrating pathogens and prevention.

Week 5: Posture and postural defects

1. Content: Knowledge: Meaning of posture and postural defects; Kinds of posture (sitting, standing, Waking); Postural defects (kyphosis, lordosis, scoliosis, flat feet, bow legs)

Causes of postural defects (poor nutrition, lack of exercise, poor sitting, walking, sleeping habits); Appropriate posture. Skills: Developing habit of a good posture; Identifying various postural defects.

2. Performance Objectives: Students should be able to: 1. explain the meaning of posture and postural defects; 2. describe kinds of posture; 3. discuss the types of postural defects; 4. explain the causes of postural defects.

3. Learning Activities:

i. Teacher Activities: The teacher facilitates discussions, shows video clips, and guides demonstrations.

ii. Learning Activities: The learners participate in whole class discussion on the meaning of posture and postural defects, The learners watch video clips on the kinds of posture and demonstrate good sitting, standing, and walking posture, The learners participate in group discussion on types of postural defects, The learners participate in whole class discussion on the causes of postural defects.

4. Teaching and Learning Resources: Video clips demonstrating postures; Posters/charts/picture showing defects and corrections.

Week 6: Physical Fitness

1. Content: Knowledge: Meaning of physical fitness; Importance of physical fitness; Components of physical fitness (health related components, performance related components); Characteristics of physically fit person. Skills: Identifying characteristics of physical fitness.

2. Performance Objectives: Students should be able to: 1. explain the meaning of physical fitness; 2. discuss the importance of physical fitness; 3. discuss the components of physical fitness; 4. state the characteristics of a physically fit person.

3. Learning Activities:

i. Teacher Activities: The teacher facilitates group and whole class discussions, The teacher guides internet searches.

ii. Learning Activities: The learners participate in group discussion the meaning of physical fitness, The learners participate in whole class discussion on the importance of physical fitness, The learners use the internet to search and discuss the components of physical fitness, The learners participate in whole class discussion on the characteristics of physical fitness.

4. Teaching and Learning Resources: Internet for fitness info; Posters/charts on components and characteristics.

Week 7: Mid-Term Break

Mid term test should be conducted the test should be from week 1 to 6.

Week 8: Body Conditioning (Part 1)

1. Content: Knowledge: Meaning of body conditioning; Exercises to ensure body conditioning (stretch, pull-up, press-up). Skills: Applying exercises for the development of the body conditioning.

2. Performance Objectives: Students should be able to: 1. explain the meaning of body conditioning; 2. perform exercises that ensure body conditioning while observing safety precautions (focus on stretch, pull-up, press-up).

3. Learning Activities:

i. Teacher Activities: The teacher facilitates discussion and shows video clips, The teacher guides individual performances.

ii. Learning Activities: The learners participate in whole class discussion on the meaning of body conditioning, The learners watch video clips on body conditioning exercises, The learners individually perform stretch, pull-up, press-up exercises.

4. Teaching and Learning Resources: Playground/fitness lab/gymnasium for practice; Mats for safety; Horizontal and parallel bars for exercises; Sports wears for comfort.

Week 9: Body Conditioning (Part 2)

1. Content: Knowledge: Exercises to ensure body conditioning (sit-up, forward roll, backward roll); Safety precautions while performing exercises. Skills: Applying exercises for the development of the body conditioning.

2. Performance Objectives: Students should be able to: 1. perform exercises that ensure body conditioning while observing safety precautions (focus on sit-up, forward roll, backward roll); 2. discuss safety precautions.

3. Learning Activities:

i. Teacher Activities: The teacher guides individual performances and discussions on safety.

ii. Learning Activities: The learners individually perform sit-up, forward roll, and backward roll exercises, The learners participate in group discussion on safety precautions.

4. Teaching and Learning Resources: Playground/fitness lab/gymnasium for practice; Mats for safety; Horizontal and parallel bars for exercises; Sports wears for comfort.

Week 10: Food and Nutrition in Health

1. Content: Knowledge: Meaning of food; Meaning of nutrition; Importance of food in health (eliminate hunger, provide energy for various physical activities, for healthy living, etc.); Classes food (carbohydrates, proteins, fats and oil, minerals salts, vitamins, water). Skills: Identifying the classes of food.

2. Performance Objectives: Students should be able to: 1. explain the meaning of food; 2. discuss the meaning of nutrition; 3. discuss the importance of food; 4. identify the classes of food.

3. Learning Activities:

i. Teacher Activities: The teacher facilitates whole class and group discussions, The teacher shows video clips.

ii. Learning Activities: The learners participate in whole on the meaning of food and nutrition, The learners participate in small group discussion on the importance of food, The learners watch video clip on the classes of food as they participate in whole class discussion accordingly.

4. Teaching and Learning Resources: Video clips on nutrition; Posters, pictures/charts showing food classes.

Week 11: Revision

Revised all the lessons and prepare your pupils for the exam.

Week 12: Examination

The exam for the term should start.

Week 13: Examination, Marking & Vacation

Examination should be concluded together with marking and recording then vacation follows once all have been achieved.
