The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) was established on July 22, 1983, by then President of Nigeria( Alhaji Shehu Shagari), due to financial and administrative crisis, the university was suspended shortly after its establishment but later in 2001 the university was re-established by the President Olusegun Obasanjo administration.
Although NOUN was re-established in 2001 but it was officially inaugurated on April 12, 2002, by President Obasanjo, with the aim of providing access to education for all Nigerians, regardless of their location or socio-economic status.
The university operates on an open and distant learning platform, allowing students to study at their own pace and convenience, without the need to attend physical classes.
Since 2001 when the university was re-established the university has grown steadily by establishing different study centers in each state and also introduce programmes and courses in different disciplines.
Due to the progress of university, NOUN has gained a lot of recognition both nationally and internationally, with partnerships and collaborations with various institutions and organizations which have contributed to the increase in thousands of students enrollment into their undergraduate and postgraduate programmes
